March 13, 2020 Notice: COVID-19 School Closure

Valley School District Staff and Families,

With recent events and serious concerns regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) surfacing for citizens across our nation and across the globe, we as a school district recognize, and take very seriously, our responsibility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students, staff, families, and the community.

This afternoon Governor Inslee issued a state-wide requirement that all public schools be closed from Tuesday, March 17 through Friday, April 24. Paideia High School will hold classes on Monday, March 16. We recognize that this extended closure will have a significant impact on our entire community, students, families, and staff – which is what makes this action so difficult.

Responding to this situation is fluid and we will adjust our plan to support students as information becomes available. Guidance is and will be coming from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), our local Educational Service District (ESD) 101, and the Tri County Health District on ways to move forward. We do not have all of the answers right now and in my 22 years of education have never seen anything like this. It is going to take us a few days to get solid answers and put plans in place, and I thank you in advance for your patience as we work on this. We will be working on how we can provide childcare for families who work in the medical field and first responders who are being called upon to support an already stressed healthcare system, a food service model, and how we can continue to support student learning.

We will continue to communicate through this challenging time and there is no doubt that we can get through this together!

Ben Ferney, Superintendent
