November 17, 2021 Valley School District Update from Superintendent Ben Ferney

Valley School District Families and Staff,

I’d like to share a few updates on topics going on in the school district.

We recently received third party input from Northeast Tri County Health District (NETCHD) and Clear Risk Solutions from their review of the COVID-19 isolation space in Valley School. These documents can be read by clicking the document links below.

Northeast Tri County Health District (NETCHD)

Clear Risk Solutions

Information about the review was shared at the Family Engagement Committee (FEC) meetings held Tuesday, November 17th at the Valley Grange. While Clear Risk and NETCHD find the isolation space off the gym acceptable, we do not plan on using it in the future. We’ve made an immediate change to use the nurse’s exam room as the priority isolation space for Valley School. This room is centrally located in the office and, like the previously used space off the gym, provides ventilation, water, a bathroom and supervision capabilities.

New guidance from the Department of Health no longer restricts the use of the nurse’s exam room for isolation purposes. With that, Valley School will move forward with the nurse’s exam room as our primary isolation space. If the nurse’s exam room reaches capacity, Valley School will use a classroom in Portable 7, which will be staffed and is equipped with a bathroom, water, desks, phone for communicating with the office, and activities for students while they wait for pick-up by parents.

Additionally, using a brainstorming activity from the Family Engagement Committee, we’ve formed a team to develop a process for communicating positive COVID-19 cases, close contacts and quarantine/isolation requirements. This team will share its progress and accept input at the next FEC meeting to be held December 9th at 9:00 a.m.

In other updates, our Bite2Go program is currently serving 30 children and there is a waitlist. It takes about $7,000.00 to serve 30 kids each year. The program needs about $4,000.00 to finish out the year; if the amount raised exceeds that, the extra funds will roll over to the next year. Please contact Elissa Koontz at 509-680-6033 to support the Bite2Go program.

We are gearing up to resume our Watch D.O.G.S. program (Dads of Great Students) in January with a kick-off event. More information will be coming soon with the event date, time, and details on completing the volunteer process. Please contact Candace Harris at 509-937-2638 to register as a volunteer for Watch D.O.G.S.

A quick reminder: Student-Parent Conferences take place next Monday and Tuesday in Valley School and Paideia High School. There is no school for students on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, November 22nd-24th leading into the regular Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday and Friday.

Thank you for continuing to support our kids and Valley School District.

Take Care,
