Moving to the Smarter Balanced Assessments

In July 2011, Washington State adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). CCSS provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn in English language arts and mathematics as they progress through grades K-12.

In the 2014-15 school year, Washington began rolling out new assessments aligned to the CCSS. The new assessments are used to gauge how well students are mastering the standards, and ultimately, how ready students are for college and further career education and training. These new assessments are called the Smarter Balanced Assessments.
